GBA Joins Push on FASB Proposal Related to Tax Reform
The Financial Standards Accounting Board Wednesday approved a measure to adjust regulatory capital balances affected by the tax reform package passed in late 2017. We signed on this week with all the other state bankers associations in support of the proposal. Read the letter here. Banks will be able to use the final standard to 2017 reporting results. The issues addressed are related to how deferred tax assets are recorded, with the previous method distorting how net income and regulatory capital are reported and creating significant operational burden for banks to track the amounts going forward. While the new standard will not change the impact to net income, the proposed adjustment between AOCI and retained earnings will allow ending regulatory capital to be appropriately stated and also avoid onerous operational requirements to keep track of the amounts that would have been “stranded” within AOCI. Details of the new standard will be released in the coming days. With questions, contact Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026, or Elizabeth Chandler, 404.420.2027.

Georgian with Banking Ties to Compete in Winter Olympics
Anyone who's followed the Winter Olympics recently could not have missed the good news story about Elana Meyers Taylor and her bobsled career. Meyers Taylor is the daughter of Eddie Meyers, Georgia president of PNC Bank, who was an athlete at the U.S. Naval Academy and with the Atlanta Falcons. Meyers Taylor grew up in Douglasville and came to be known as one of the most genuinely nicest people anyone would ever meet. And she carries that attribute onto the bobsled course while remaining super competitive. There was a cool focus piece on her in USA Today this week, and we thought you'd like to read it, so click here to see why this Georgian is expected to be on the medal stand in Pyeongchang.

Powell
Powell Takes Reins at Federal Reserve
A new era began Monday at the Federal Reserve, with Jerome H. Powell taking the oath of office as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. The Senate confirmed him on Jan. 23. Powell's term is for four years. He'll be tested early on as it's widely viewed that interest rates and climbing wages may push up inflation and trigger the Fed to raise rates faster than has been expected. All that talk led to a big market selloff early this week. Interestingly, market selloffs have accompanied the start of the past several Fed chairs' terms, according to a report from CNBC. From a regulatory and enforcement standpoint, Powell has signaled a desire to lessen regulatory burden on community banks. Read Powell's bio here...

Is Your Debit Card Brand Program Working For Your Bank?

On March 12, please join Richard Green of Discover Debit to learn more about the review and analysis process of selecting the debit card program for your bank. Letting an existing signature debit network contract simply roll over can seem like the right thing to do, but a closer look might prove otherwise. If it has been a few years since you last signed a contract with your signature network, now is the time to reassess. You are more than likely leaving non-interest income on the table, paying unnecessary fees or dealing with burdensome terms that restrict you from adapting to shifting market trends, including PINless and mobile transactions, the EMV liability shift and changes in the debit card landscape. In Discover’s presentation, you will learn…
