GBA’s New Fiscal Year Off to a Fast Start
July 1 was the official start date for GBA’s new fiscal year and we’re hitting the ground running. We’re unpacking the boxes from the recent annual meeting where 369 members gathered and repacking those boxes for the upcoming Leadership Conference where another 272 are registered - that’s 641 people we’ll see within 30 days - thank you for that great support! Almost all the volunteer slots are filled for our committees, task forces and boards - 305 in all. The GBA Board will be ably led by our new chairman John Hall, president and CEO of American Pride Bank, Macon. The GBA Insurance Trust board is meeting next week to select their new officers for the coming year to oversee that program that’s so important to the 25,000 members and their families covered by the trust. And the GBA Retirement Services board is about to announce the latest member bank that has voted to move their retirement plan to us. “As we enter our 126th year of service to Georgia bankers, our Board, volunteers and staff are energized about what lies ahead. We’re able to do what we do here at the Georgia Bankers Association because of the great support from almost every bank doing business in Georgia. Thank you for that investment in money, time and resources,” said GBA president and CEO Joe Brannen. Click here for more highlights…
Personal Appeal - Georgia Bankers Serving their Communities
The July issue of Georgia Trend magazine is out and includes their annual article on community banking. It’s no surprise the theme running throughout the piece focuses on the personal nature of relationships. The member bankers contributing to the article did a great job telling their story about how they go about serving their community one customer at a time. Former Leadership GBA president, Parrish Clark, president and CEO of Guardian Bank, Valdosta, said, “In a community bank, the decision-maker is sitting across the desk from you…people want bankers to know their names and show appreciation for their business.” Click here to see what the others said and read the full article…
Industry Update to Kick Off Blockbuster Leadership Conference July 16-19
With nearly 275 bankers, Associate Members and their families registered, and a fully-booked exhibit space at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club, Leadership GBA’s 2018 Leadership Conference is going to be a can’t-miss event. There's no better place to learn from the experts about topics that will help make you and your bank successful and strengthen your network of peers. GBA president and CEO Joe Brannen and senior vice president David Oliver will kick off the conference this year with The 411 on All Things Georgia Banking, a look at the big picture for Georgia’s banks including the latest statewide trends, facts and figures, as well as the most up-to-date legislative and regulatory developments. See the complete agenda here. There is still time to register by clicking here, but don't wait much longer!
Comp & Benefits Survey Deadline Extended
You’ve still got time to submit data for the 2018 GBA Compensation and Benefits Survey. We’ve extended the deadline to July 16. Important: You only need to fill in data about jobs at your bank. We survey for a big list of jobs bankers have requested over the years, but realize that not all banks have as many staff members or diverse job titles and descriptions. It’s perfectly OK to focus only on those relevant to your particular institution. Participants save money on the results reports, which are only $150 for banks that provide data for the Salary and Non-Salary components. Access information and passwords have been emailed to CEOs and human resources contacts. Access the survey website here. Please contact Rhonda Snyder of Mathews Young if you did not get it.

Fed Report Explores Ways to Bridge Workforce Skills Gap in Southern States
Some southern states trying to adapt to a new U.S. economy, in which most jobs require training beyond high school, are coming up short according to a new report from the Atlanta Fed’s Center for Workforce and Economic Opportunity, the St. Louis Fed, and the National Skills Coalition. The report discusses some of the unique demographic and economic characteristics of the South, such as an economy that was once built on low-skill industries, as well as existing barriers that prevent people from working, training for middle-skill jobs, or advancing their careers. However there are some good examples of programs in some states that are already working to address the skills gap, including the Georgia High Demand Career Initiative that provides grant funding to build regional, employer-centered sector partnerships. Fiduciary Responsibilities are Tricky - Are you Protected?
Most 401(k) plan sponsors would prefer not to hold personal fiduciary responsibility for their plan, but the fact is, if you are sponsoring a 401(k) plan, you are a fiduciary of the plan. That can be a daunting role, as most typically don’t have the expertise to make prudent investment decisions required for the plan. However, GBA Retirement Services (GBARS) can relieve you of a large portion of these responsibilities by thoroughly evaluating and selecting an independent discretionary trustee that has full legal and fiduciary responsibilities for the investment of plan assets. GBA Retirement Services is pleased to partner with Unified Trust to offer fully qualified fiduciary management of plan assets. Click here to learn more about GBARS and Unified Trust…
