Gov. Signs GBA Priority Bill, Vetoes Two We Monitored with Concerns

Nathan Deal for signing GBA’s priority bill of the recent legislative session, HB 780, that allows shareholders to give boards of directors additional liability protection and expands existing statutory parity provisions to ensure state chartered banks remain in a competitively equal position with nationally chartered banks. GBA Insurance Trust Annual Meeting June 18 - Official Notice

The Georgia Bankers Association Insurance Trust’s Annual Membership Meeting for employees covered under the various insurance plans offered by the GBA Insurance Trust will be during GBA's 126th Annual Meeting. The GBA Insurance Trust meeting is Monday, June 18, at 7 a.m. For further details on the full GBA meeting schedule, please visit the annual meeting page on our website. The purpose of this meeting will be to receive a report about GBA Insurance Trust operations, to elect directors, and to ratify the various acts of the directors since the last meeting.

Primaries Coming Up - Go Vote!

The May 22 primary for many state and local elections is just around the corner. Advance voting is open until May 18. Every seat in the Georgia General Assembly is up for grabs as are those for all statewide officers: Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, State School Superintendent, Commissioners of Agriculture, Insurance and Labor, and several Public Service Commissioners, certain Justices of the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. Ag Conference Dedicated to Longtime Supporter

Bankers serving the needs to Georgia's largest industry, agriculture, will gather Monday week for their two-day annual conference. The Rural Development and Lending Conference, May 21-22, at The King and Prince Hotel on St. Simons, was always a favorite of longtime Georgia Banker and Agriculture Committee member, Charlie Curry, the late president and CEO of the First State Bank of Randolph County. In recognition of Charlie's service to the industry and especially to the needs of rural Georgians, the Agriculture Committee planning the conference is dedicating the conference to Charlie's memory. House Overturns Indirect Auto Lending Guidance

The U.S. House Tuesday used the Congressional Review Act to overturn CFPB guidance limiting how and what indirect lenders pay car dealers who provide financing and how much discretion dealers have to set loan terms and rates. The Senate has passed a similar resolution. Congress was able to overturn the guidance because late last year the Government Accounting Office ruled the guidance constituted a formal rule subject to Congressional review.

Make Sure Georgia is Well Represented in National Survey

The Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) has rolled out data collection for its 2018 National Survey of Community Banks. This annual survey has become a vital pillar to the Community Banking in the 21st Century research and policy conference put on each year by CSBS and the St. Louis Federal Reserve. Let’s make sure Georgia’s industry is well represented. The survey should take about 20-25 minutes to complete and may be completed in multiple stages. Take the survey here.

With the 2018 Farm Bill beginning to take shape and moving toward debate in the U.S. House and Senate committees, there’s no better time to urge Congress to include needed reform of the Farm Credit System. There’s a new resource that explains the industry priorities we have, including addressing FCS’ mission creep, the need to provide better public notification of enforcement actions and a variety of real-estate lending reforms to level the playing field for banks looking to grow farm lending portfolios. Students Completing Georgia Banking School, Basic Compliance School

More than 150 bankers have been in Athens this week for Georgia Banking School and Basic Compliance School. Students and faculty got right to work with Sunday afternoon orientation and classes and then gathered en masse to enjoy a welcome barbecue.
