It Never Gets Old... Georgia Again No. 1 State for Business
Area Development magazine last week named Georgia the top state for business for the fifth straight year. The magazine is a top corporate site selection publication. "Behind this ranking are hundreds of thousands of jobs for Georgia families and billions of dollars of meaningful investment in our communities," Gov. Nathan Deal said in an announcement about the recognition. Georgia Bank CEOs, lawyers and accountants will hear from a panel of Georgia economic development experts next week at their fall conferences about some of the things that make Georgia so attractive. In addition to being named the top state for business, Georgia ranked first among the states for workforce development programs and cooperative and responsive state government. Georgia also ranked in the top five spots in each of the other nine categories examined in the survey. Related: President/CEO Conference; Bank Counsel Conference; Bank Accountant Conference
Update on Loudermilk Bill to Reform SARs/CTRs
We heard this week that the bill we told you about recently by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA11) to increase the BSA’s currency transaction report threshold and suspicious activity report threshold will likely be a part of a group of bills the House will consider after the November election. According to reports, Loudermilk’s bill (H.R. 6850) is among several that will go straight to the House floor as opposed to through the Financial Services Committee because of special rules in place for noncontroversial bills. Please relay your support of the bill to your representative to the U.S. House. Contact info here. Stay tuned, as we’ll keep you posted on the bill’s progress. With questions, please call Elizabeth Chandler at 404.420.2027 or Joe Brannen at 404.420.2026.
OCC Invites Input on CRA Modernization
Earlier this month, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency published in the Federal Register its Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to request comments on ideas to modernize the Community Reinvestment Act regulatory framework. GBA plans to submit a comment letter on this important topic and your feedback is needed. While the OCC is the only agency so far to ask for such feedback, it’s important for all type chartered banks to review this proposal as other agencies are expected to follow suit. We would appreciate those involved with this process at your bank reviewing this proposal and letting us know your thoughts so we may compile them into our comment letter. We ask for your comments by Nov. 1 so that we may meet the Nov. 19 submission deadline. Please send feedback to Elizabeth Chandler at GBA or give her a call with any questions at 404.420.2027.
Ops/Tech Committee Hashes out Key Issues
Collaboration and information sharing were at high levels Wednesday at the meeting of GBA’s Operations and Technology Committee. Committee members shared key issues with peers from their respective GBA geographic groups and thoughts about advocacy and educational needs for Ops/Tech pros. With Hurricane Florence affecting the region recently, disaster recovery and incidence response best practices were top of mind. And, there was lots of chatter about efficiency initiatives, fraud protection, branch transformation and payments. The committee is taking those issues and others to craft the agenda for the next GBA Operations and Technology Conference, which is March 25-27 at the King and Prince, St. Simons Island. Mark your calendar to attend now and look for registration and program details soon. The committee chair is Lamar Doolittle of the Geo. D. Warthen Bank, Sandersville, and the vice chair is Jaye Eubanks, United Bank, Zebulon. You may email either one of them or contact GBA’s Alison Moreau, 404.420.2034, if you have programming ideas.

Georgia Bankers Democracy Days
Resources for Banks and Key Dates for Registration and other Election Activities

We’re about to see the biggest shakeup in Georgia’s elected leadership in almost a decade. All the statewide constitutional officers, every member of the state House and Senate, all 14 Members of our U.S. House delegation and countless local officials will be on the ballot. So, we encourage member banks and bankers to take full advantage of their standing in the community to participate in this year’s elections. Please vote, and please also encourage staff, customers and friends to vote. Every vote counts. Just take a look at the runoff for the Republican nominee for Lt. Governor this year. It was decided by fewer than 2,000 votes. We’ve got some handy resources again we’ll send you if you’d like. They are:
  • A sample employee newsletter article or e-mail about the key dates and your company’s participation
  • A flier you can post in your offices or hand out to customers with key dates and resources
  • A business-card-sized reminder to vote you can print and pass out in the days before the election.
  • A news release announcing your participation in the campaign
  • A list of possible Tweets or Facebook posts for social media - don’t forget the #GABankersVote hashtag
  • Specialty logos

CFPB Office Coming to Atlanta

The CFPB last week confirmed it plans to move a small group of employees from Washington, D.C., to an office in Atlanta within the next 15 months. The employees are analysts and managers supporting examiners in the South. The bureau says having the group in Atlanta will help align its staff regulators such as the Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC, which already have a regional presence in town. "The city selection process led to Atlanta as the city that best enables the Bureau to fulfill its statutory mission and enhance its collaboration with its regulatory partners, while being as efficient as possible," the agency said in a statement to The Hill online news outlet.
