Farm Banks in Georgia Posted Strong 2018 Performance

The 40 banks in Georgia that have big ag-related loan portfolios strengthened their service to farm communities in 2018. Those banks increased farm loans by 10.58% overall, boosted agricultural production loans by 18.68% and upped farm real estate lending by 7.87% according to an ABA analysis of farm bank performance. ABA defines farm banks as those whose ratio of domestic farm loans to total domestic loans is greater than or equal to the industry average, which in 2018 was 16.07%. "Overall, Georgia farm banks are exhibiting remarkable health going into 2019," the report said. Employment at Georgia’s farm banks also was up by 2.09%. These 40 banks operate 162 branches and employ 2,194 Georgia residents. Nationally, ABA reported the 1,772 farm banks increased agricultural lending by 5.3%. Speak up with Issues for our D.C. Visit

We want to hear from you about questions or issues you’d like us to raise with regulators and the Georgia Congressional delegation during our annual group advocacy visit to Washington, D.C., May 7-9. What’s on your mind related to exams, enforcement, regulatory burden, laws and policies that need adjusting? What are personal and business financial conditions like in your markets for your customers and hometowns? At the GBA Board meeting earlier this month, they focused on the lack of a federal response on disaster aid, ongoing regulatory challenges with BSA/AML, brokered deposits and national rate caps, data privacy, banking cannabis related businesses, leveling the playing field with Farm Credit and Credit Unions and asking the bank regulators to dive more deeply into CECL prior to implementation. Anything else you want us to cover? We’ve got a big group of GBA Board members, Public Affairs Committee, BankPAC Board and the Leadership GBA Executive Committee members planning to attend, and your input can shape our message to them and the questions we ask. We’ve got meetings scheduled with most of our delegation, including Sen. David Perdue, a lunch with Rep. Barry Loudermilk, and briefings with Fed Governor Michelle Bowman, Rebekah Jurata, special assistant to the President on economic policy, the FDIC, OCC, CFPB and SBA. If you haven’t chimed in with issues you want us to be sure and cover, please send a quick note to Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026, or Elizabeth Chandler, 404.420.2027.

First OREO Update in 20 Years Proposed by OCC

National banks and savings associations will want to take a look at a proposal by the OCC out this week to update its regulations on other real estate owned (OREO). The proposal would streamline and clarify a number of items and bring the rules for federal savings associations in alignment with those for national banks. Items addressed include the OREO holding period, disposal methods for OREO and some outdated capital rules related to OREO provisions. Comments are due by June 23. We’re reviewing to determine if a GBA comment is warranted. Please let us know if you have specific concerns. Contact Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026, or Elizabeth Chandler, 404.420.2027.

Serving the Public Interest and Valuing Each Customer with Brad Brookshire

When Brad Brookshire, coastal market executive of Citizens Bank & Trust Company in Richmond Hill, began in his first job in banking as a credit analyst for Bryan Bank & Trust, he quickly learned how to adapt to a small organization in which daily duties frequently were nothing like the official job description. “I learned that a true community bank is a valuable asset to our small but growing community. Each customer is special, and I was taught that each customer is more than just numbers on a piece of paper,” he said. Brookshire, who has recently opened the Citizens Bank & Trust Company office in Richmond Hill along with associate Jon Seagraves, said they thought their community bank model would work, "but we have been blown away by the reception we have received from the Richmond Hill community. The excitement from our customers has made the long hours and hard work extremely rewarding.” Brookshire shares about his public service as Bryan County Commissioner, favorite TV show and more in this week’s GBA member profile.
