Leadership Conference a Smashing Success

We had a capacity crowd of more than 365 bankers, associate members and their family members at this year’s Leadership Conference that wrapped up Wednesday. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals Upholds Verdict Against Former Bank Directors

In a disappointing decision for the banking community, on July 22, 2019, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit upheld a ruling against former bank directors in the FDIC v. Loudermilk case. USDA Announces Details of Support Package for Farmers

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has announced further details of the $16 billion package aimed at supporting American agricultural producers affected by retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods and other trade disruptions. FDIC Has New Regional Ombudsman

We were glad to meet Charmion Haley, the FDIC’s regional ombudsman when she stopped by GBA’s office for a visit last week. Haley is no stranger to many of our bankers as she’s been in the supervisory area of the agency throughout her career and brings those years of in-bank experience to the job. Colorado Banker Addresses Senate Hearing Covers SAFE Banking Act

We’re following with interest growing bipartisan support for the SAFE Banking Act, which would allow financial institutions to serve cannabis-related businesses in states that have legalized the drug. A hearing this week by the U.S. Senate Financial Services Committee is more evidence the bill is getting some traction. Read details of the testimony given at the hearing and our opinion here.

Since his first job at Raintree Golf Course in Thomaston, Holt Redding, now vice president and controller for South Coast Bank & Trust, Brunswick, has prided himself on efficiency. "I learned at an early age that accomplishing your tasks in a timely manner is key to achieving recognition for your work," Redding said. His father a career banker, Redding says going into the financial industry was "writing on the wall." The 2019-2020 Chair of the GBA Asset/Liability Management Committee, Redding says he owes a great deal to GBA programs for providing opportunities to make friendships that will endure outside of banking. 2019 BankPAC Campaign Begins with a Bang!

The 2019 BankPAC Board of Directors is excited to announce the kickoff of this year’s campaign for both the GBA StatePAC and the GBA FedPAC funds. All CEOs should have received the fundraising brochure outlining how your bank, directors, officers and eligible staff may participate in this important effort. "We are more committed than ever to elevate the importance of this endeavor as it is in our collective interests to do everything possible to protect and promote our industry," said Luke Flatt, chairman, president and CEO of AB&T in Albany and chairman of the GBA BankPAC Board of Directors. "Furthermore, many of our pro-banking, pro-business partners elected to Congress and the Georgia General Assembly are in need of our support going into this next election cycle," he added. On Aug. 8 at Middle Georgia State University in Macon, Steve Moore of Bank Compliance Services will address the challenges faced by small banks in today’s regulatory environment. The context for the discussion will be current TILA, RESPA, Flood Insurance, and HMDA regulatory rules. The discussion will also address the various financial and operational considerations of CRE lending by small banks. The presentation will be primarily from the banker’s perspective, and we will discuss "pros and cons" of these regulatory rules and the various business challenges faced when offering CRE loans. Identification of High-Risk Entities and Individuals at Account Opening
