Tandem Bank Opens in Tucker

Georgia’s first new bank in 11 years opened its doors for business Sept. 23 in downtown Tucker. Tandem Bank , led by President and CEO Charles Dewitt , will be a full-service community bank serving entrepreneurs, small- to mid-sized businesses, professionals and residents in and around the Tucker area. The bank says it also will look to open offices in downtown Decatur and Peachtree Corners in the future. "We welcome Tandem Bank to the family of Georgia’s banks, and applaud Charles and the Tandem team for getting up and running so quickly after getting regulatory approval," said GBA President and CEO Joe Brannen . We Will Miss Henry Pope

We were saddened to learn that Henry Pope , president and CEO of the Exchange Bank , Milledgeville, died this past Sunday. "Henry was one of the bankers I grew up with in the industry and he was always willing to help a fellow banker. He did as good a job as anyone I know balancing the hectic schedule of a banker serving his community yet always finding time for family. I will cherish the many fond memories we made over the years and I know our members will join us in keeping Helen and their family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," said GBA president Joe Brannen . Read about Pope’s long history with the association and see a fitting tribute here .

U.S. House Passes Cannabis Clarification Bill

Our thanks to the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the bipartisan SAFE Banking Act, HR 1595 by Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO). The bill addresses some of the complexities bankers encounter as they try to serve businesses related to the cannabis industry as authorized by their state legislatures. With 33 states now having legalized some form of cannabis-related activities, the bill allows banks to serve certain businesses in those states and prohibits federal regulators from taking action against a bank solely because cannabis is involved. GBA Insurance Trust Board Gets Investment Report

Each quarter, the GBA Insurance Trust, Inc. Board of Directors chaired by Rick Whaley , The Citizens Bank of Americus , reviews the Trust’s reserves portfolio and hears from the wealth managers with BNY Mellon , Randy McGeorge and Nancy Driggers , both Senior Directors. At the Board meeting this week, the news was good. As part of his presentation, McGeorge discussed the U.S. and global economies pointing out that the U.S. continues to grow modestly as the Eurozone and China economies slow and central banks move to a more accommodative stance. Bankers always key in on the financial markets, and a good discussion was held about bond yields being lower for longer and persistent volatility in the equities market. The managers plan to maintain a neutral weight in equities with a domestic bias while retaining their emphasis on yield and a small underweight on bonds. Click here for commentary from Whaley and a summary of the investment outlook and strategy being employed.

Final Overtime Rule Released by Labor Dept.

The Department of Labor this week set the salary level at which an employee could be exempt from federal overtime and minimum wage requirements at $35,568 per year, or $684 per week. The final rule will take effect Jan 1, 2020. This is significantly less than the level adopted under a 2016 rule issued by the Obama administration, and slightly higher than proposed earlier in the year. The final rule also raises the threshold for employees who are classified as "highly compensated," and the Department of Labor committed to updating the salary level more frequently in the future.

Participant Success should be Number One Priority in a 401(k) Plan

Do you know if your employees are on track for a successful retirement? Most sponsors do not know how to measure success in a retirement plan. We believe a plan is successful when the majority of your employees can retire with a sufficient replacement income in retirement. Most experts believe you will need at least 70% of your current income in retirement. Watch this short video for more information:
We believe in putting the needs of participants first and helping them achieve a successful retirement. Now is a great time to begin your plan review for the upcoming 2020 plan year. Even if you are not looking to make a change, as a fiduciary, you should be reviewing your retirement plan regularly and we can help you with your due diligence file. Please contact Mandy Richards at 404.420.2025 for a plan comparison and to learn more about how we are helping participants reach retirement successfully!
