General Assembly Has Busy, Abbreviated Week

The Georgia General Assembly was in session Monday through Wednesday this week and have adjourned until Feb. 18 to work on the budget. Legislators were busy in committee meetings, and several bills we’re following saw action. Read a summary here, and be sure and read this week’s Legislative Update that was emailed on Thursday and give us your feedback on a bill that may result in fewer opportunities for banks to serve the lending needs of their local governments. With questions, contact Elizabeth Chandler, 404.420.2027, Steve Bridges, 404.420.2037, or Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026.

Contribute to GBA’s Community of Bankers
Volunteer or Nominate Someone for a GBA Committee or Board

Did you know that more 300 bankers volunteer each year to serve on a GBA committee or board? We’re truly an association driven by widespread member involvement. Now’s the time of year we’re starting to work with the 13 standing GBA committees and 10 boards to make sure they are "staffed" with volunteers to continue their work for the 2020-21 program year. Some volunteers will continue in their roles and others will roll off as their terms expire. So, we’re always looking for new representatives who want to serve their fellow bankers. Committee members help shape GBA educational programs for their peers, help staff define and understand advocacy priorities and serve as the association’s eyes and ears for identifying member needs around the state. Volunteering provides significant networking and career skill building opportunities, too.
The deadline for volunteers and nominations for 2020-2021 is March 31. Get more info here.

Sid Roland's 40 Years of Banking with Friends

When Sid Roland, now senior vice president at Southern Bank & Trust in Clarkesville, started his first job as a bank teller for Cornelia Bank, he was placed alongside the head teller. "My teller line window would be empty, while hers had 10 customers waiting. I would ask if I could help the next customer in her line, but they would decline just so they could speak to her and have her take care of their banking needs," Roland said. He learned from her that treating customers with a caring attitude will gain their trust, and he says this lesson has stuck with him throughout 40 years of banking. The new chairman of the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce knows the importance of being plugged into his local community and "doing life" with customers who have become lifelong friends. He shares his hopes for his local community as the Chamber leader, thoughts on the future of banking and some surprising musical hobbies in his GBA Member Profile.

National Rate Cap Bill Gets Hearing in U.S. House

We’re watching with interest a bill that would set a national interest rate cap of 36% APR on all consumer loans. U.S. House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters (D-CA43) is supporting the bill, which was discussed in a hearing Wednesday. Citing meaningful feedback from bankers, Georgia Rep. David Scott (D-GA13) was among several Democrats expressing concern that the bill would actually limit access to credit for borrowers who need short-term loans as well as increase debt levels for those who do get credit. Read Scott’s remarks and get more information here. We’ll monitor the progress of the bill and keep in touch with Scott and the Georgia delegation as debate continues.

In Search of Georgia Stories: National Website Highlights Community Impact

The America’s Banks website demonstrates the tremendous impact banks across the country have on their customers, communities and the overall economy. We want to make sure Georgia is represented with stories that highlight the many ways that banks of all sizes open doors of opportunity every day - from helping customers buy a home or start a business, to making transactions safe and convenient. The site’s developers are also looking for stories about veterans, reservists and military spouses currently working in the banking industry, as well as bank-led programs, partnerships and events that directly benefit military service members and veterans. To submit a story about your bank or for more information, contact ABA's Amy Wertlieb.
