Notice of GBA Annual Meeting

Drews to be Chairman; Proctor, Hall, Bibb Nominated as Officers

As stated in GBA's bylaws, the GBA annual meeting is held at a time and place set by the GBA Board of Directors. The official GBA business session of this year's Annual Meeting will begin at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at the JW Marriott Hotel in Austin, Texas, Lone Star rooms E-H. At this meeting, Richard E. Drews, CEO, Century Bank of Georgia, Cartersville, will be installed as the 127th Chairman of the Georgia Bankers Association. Also, the statewide officers of the association will be elected. The bankers recommended by the GBA Nominating Committee to stand for election to GBA office are:
  • For Chairman-elect, H. Palmer Proctor, president, Fidelity Bank, Atlanta
  • For Vice Chairman, John F. Hall, president and CEO, American Pride Bank, Macon
  • For Secretary / Treasurer, Kenneth A. Bibb, president, The Geo. D. Warthen Bank, Sandersville

New FDIC Premium Rules Set for Banks under $10 Billion in Assets

About 93 percent of banks with assets below $10 billion will see somewhat lower FDIC premium assessments under new rules finalized this week, the FDIC says. The new standardized calculation for all banks will include financial measures and supervisory ratings derived from a statistical model estimating the probability of failure over three years. Know the New Small Creditor and Rural/Underserved Rules

Banks that have less than $2 billion in assets and originated less than 2,000 first-lien mortgages that were sold or transferred in the past year may meet new standards that qualify them as small creditors. And there are relatively new definitions for rural and underserved areas that include rural pockets by zip code within counties that are otherwise non-rural. Participation Opens May 2!

It's Comp. and Benefits Survey Time

Our enhanced GBA Compensation and Benefits Survey opens for participation Monday, May 2. We’ve taken feedback from the GBA HR Committee and survey partner, Matthews, Young – Management Consulting, to improve the survey and report for members. The non-salary component is shorter this year and surveys only for the most critical bonus and incentive trends, retirement plan and director compensation information. It also has a new online submission system. The salary component has eight new or adjusted titles and position descriptions. Three Georgia Banks in Top 50 for Small Bank ROAE

American Banker this week published its list of publicly traded banks and thrifts with less than $2 billion in assets that have largest Return on Average Equity (ROAE) for the past three years. Thomasville Bankshares , Stephen Cheney, CEO, came in at No. 5. Two other Georgia banks, Southeastern Bank Financial Corporation, Dan Blanton, CEO, Augusta, and First Intercontinental Bank, Don Kim, president and CEO, Doraville, were in the top 50. See the full list here. The article said loan and deposit growth helped offset higher expenses for the standouts and the peer group as a whole. The peer group is comprised of 684 institutions.

Annual Meeting Breakout Session Spotlight

Community Bank Performance and Value Trends

Curtis Carpenter, Principal at Sheshunoff & Company, Austin, TX, will be at the GBA Annual Meeting to deliver a data-rich review of topics that include performance trends of regional banks compared to community banks, the impact of the shrinking number of banks, and publicly-traded bank valuations with a focus on Georgia banks. He’ll also discuss the dramatic performance/valuation differences of banks with varying levels of loans to deposits, recent merger activity and prices, and the implications for community bank performance and value. CECL Implementation Delayed, No Changes to Standard

The Financial Accounting Standards board (FASB) Wednesday voted to move ahead with its Current Expected Credit Loss (CECL) standard, but it delayed implementation by a year. The delay was requested by the American Bankers Association. Banks that file with the Securities and Exchange Commission will now have until 2020 to implement CECL, while non-SEC filers will have until 2021. Early adoption will be permitted starting in 2019. Georgia Bankers in Schools Friday

Friday is National Teach Children to Save Day, and a large contingent of Georgia banks and their bankers are participating in presentations around the state. See a list of participants here. Teach Children to Save (TCTS) is a national program—sponsored by the ABA Community Engagement Foundation—that organizes banker volunteers to help young people develop a savings habit early in life.
