Dodd-Frank Reform Talk Spins up; Speak up for GBA D.C. Trip

President Trump this week again publicly pledged action to make reforms to the Dodd-Frank Act. During a town-hall meeting with business leaders Tuesday, the president leveled pointed criticism at the act and its effects on banks and the availability of credit. However, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R., N.C.), who is vice chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, told the Wall Street Journal it will be June or July before such legislation would come before the House. The timeframe is notable because it is not long after GBA’s annual member advocacy visit to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Congress and regulators, May 9-11. We always like to brief our delegation with specific stories about how laws and regulations affect banks and customers, and the timing for sharing those real-world stories couldn’t be better this year. April is Financial Literacy Month - Get Involved

Help GBA celebrate April as Financial Literacy Month by getting out into the community and teaching students about money. A poll out this week reports 88 percent of adults agree that personal finance skills should be taught in schools. (How 12 percent could disagree with that or be unsure about it is a mystery to us!) The good news here is Georgia is among the states that require high school students to take a course that includes personal finance skills. The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta reports that Georgia’s required Economics course does cover banks, credit, saving and spending and other personal finance skills. Bankers can help supplement that by making presentations to school groups as part of national Teach Children to Save Day April 28 or anytime this month. The resources also include materials for younger students. See all the free TCTS resources available and sign up here. Other financial literacy resources are available on our website under the Member Center/Financial Literacy Resources drop down menu.
