Advocacy in Action

Rep. Johnson Goes to the Bank

U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA4) was the guest of Citizens Trust Bank in Atlanta this week as part of the “Take Your Lawmaker to Work” campaign supported by GBA in conjunction with the American Bankers Association. “This visit allowed Citizens Trust Bank to give our local representative in Congress a hometown perspective on banking that he can take with him to Washington," said Diedra L. St. Julien, the bank’s marketing director and a member of the GBA Marketing Committee. Bank staff shared the bank’s history with Rep. Johnson, as well as gave him a thorough overview of how accounts are opened and other bank operations. Read more about the visit here. Our thanks to bank CEO and GBA board member Cynthia Day for coordinating the event.

Hotel Breach Again Highlights Liability, Security Issues

News this week about a data breach at the hotel operator for Hyatt, Sheraton, Marriott, Westin and other hotels in 10 states provided GBA with another opportunity to advocate for better security standards at merchants and coverage of costs to banks associated with such breaches. We’ve been having ongoing discussions with our Members of Congress about the issue. Our message has been that more merchants should install and activate chip-card terminals on a faster timeframe, merchants should be held to the same data security standards as banks and the party responsible for the breach should bear all of the costs. Read some of the details about our main points made by CEO Joe Brannen…

Diversity Self-Assessment Tool on the Way

Earlier this month banking regulators provided information about how banks may begin to submit self-assessments of their diversity policies and practices and issued Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the process. In the release, regulators strongly encouraged financial institutions to disclose on their websites their diversity policies and practices, as well as information related to their self-assessments, to maximize transparency, and to provide their policies, practices, and self-assessment information to their primary federal financial regulator. While the self-assessments are voluntary, we understand that many banks will want to begin doing annual assessments in early 2017. GBA Strategic Partner Employment Law Compliance is developing a program to help banks do this, which will be available in November. Click here to learn more...
