Boat Titling Legislation Possible in 2015 Session

We've been in meetings this week discussing legislation that would require titling for boats and outboard motors in Georgia. It's an issue that has come up from time to time over the years but hasn't moved. However, interested parties have come together again with a draft bill for the 2015 General Assembly session. GBA's Elizabeth Chandler, SVP-government relations, has participated in meetings about the legislation and we've also circulated the draft of the legislation and a section-by-section analysis to the GBA Public Affairs Committee, chaired by Jackson McConnell, Pinnacle Bank, Elberton, for feedback.  Please let us know if you have additional thoughts. Contact Elizabeth Chandler, 404.420.2027, or Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026. More about the possible boat titling legislation here...

Member Drive Kicks off for Bank Counsel Section

We're looking to add new members to GBA's Bank Counsel Section. In addition to representing their particular bank clients, these attorneys and firms provide your association with valuable expertise and insight about banking law. Participation in GBA is one way these lawyers and firms can give something back to the industry that generously supports their practices. Membership is not just for General Counsel firms or attorneys. If your bank or firm has specialized attorneys or hires other firms on a specialized basis, they are eligible for membership, too. So please keep those attorneys in mind for recruitment. If you know of a good candidate firm or attorney, simply make a referral to us through this online form, and we'll contact them about membership.

Branches, ATMs, Mobile Gain Traction for Customer Preferences

More consumers say branches are their preferred method for banking compared to last year in an annual ABA survey. Online banking is still the most preferred channel, but it fell by eight points to 31 percent. Branches as a preference rose by four points to 21 percent, ATMs were up by three points to 14 percent and mobile banking hit 10 percent, up two points. Banks continue to adjust how they serve customers, with branches taking on new looks and adding technology to make the customer experience faster and easier. GBA Strategic Partner NCR has a suite of ATM and Branch Transformation solutions to help your bank enhance the customer experience.

Mortgage Rules Raising Costs for Banks

Three of every four lenders responding to a recent Fannie Mae Survey say the new CFPB Mortgage rules have increased their operational expenses. And, 85 percent said they are spending more on quality control. The survey also shows that lenders are being cautious about entering the market for non-QM loans. Only 12 percent and 17 percent of small and mid-sized lenders, respectively, said they plan to actively pursue non-QM loans.
