Better Banking Industry is Message to Cleveland Rotary Club

GBA's public advocacy message about the state's improving banking sector reached Cleveland, GA, this week. Joe Brannen, GBA president and CEO, was the guest of Don Allison, Mountain Valley Community Bank (pictured at right with Mountain Valley CEO and GBA Board Member Marc Greene), at the White County Rotary Club Tuesday. FDIC Reports Second Quarter Results

Georgia Banks Extend Improvement Trends

FDIC released this year's second quarter performance reports Thursday and the positive trends we've been seeing for the industry continued. Over 88 percent of Georgia banks were profitable, bank employment numbers grew as did loans and deposits. Capital levels also remained strong. Other real estate owned continued to decline as did the percent of noncurrent loans. Link to more in-depth analysis and a chart with the key numbers we follow showing the trends for Georgia banks over the last year and giving the national numbers for the June 30 quarter...

Bank Directors Prepare for the Future

We had a full house of bank directors and executive management in Macon this week talking among themselves and learning from experts as they plan for the future. The ideas behind the program were to stimulate new ways of thinking about old concepts and to share expected requirements from bank regulators coming down the pike. As one director was leaving the seminar, he said, "I've never seen so much useful information packed into one day's program. Everything the speakers talked about was on our list to discuss at our upcoming strategic planning session; the conference could not have been more timely." That's what we like to hear! Read more about highlights from the Directors and Executive Management Seminar here...

GBA Encourages More Work on Sub-S Dividend Restrictions

GBA joined 13 other state bankers associations this week in urging the FDIC and other regulators to provide Subchapter S banks with the full ability to fulfill their tax obligation before dividend restrictions covered by the Basel III Capital Conservation Buffer rules kick in. In a letter to American Banker, the associations credited FDIC for taking the initial steps to help the situation, but say more should be done. The simple solution would be to make the rules for Sub-S banks similar to those for C-Corp banks related to tax and dividend treatment under BASEL III. Access more information describing what SBAs are pushing for and link to the letter we sent here...

GBA Compliance Conference: In Their Words

The Chance to Connect with Other Compliance Officers is a Huge Value for this Georgia Banker

GBA's Compliance Conference is less than a month away and is sure to be a hit. With over a hundred bankers from all over the state already registered, we're expecting a big crowd of bankers at the conference. There is still plenty of time to sign up if you've been on the fence. We recently asked members of our Compliance Committee to share what they value about the GBA Compliance Conference, and got a ton of good feedback:

"The greatest benefit of the conference to me is the ability to meet and talk to other compliance officers. There are compliance officers there with a wide range of experience and from banks of all sizes; the contacts that you can make there are invaluable.  So many of us wear a lot of different hats at our banks, the sharing of information, and processes and procedures at the conference are great time savers and also allows me to get a different perspective on the way my bank operates. I really don't think that there is anywhere else that a compliance officer can go and make as many contacts or take away as many tools and information that they can actually take back to their bank and use on a daily basis. - Melody Halloran, Compliance Officer, Bank Secrecy Officer, Security Officer, WB&T Bankshares, Valdosta and GBA Compliance Committee Vice Chair

CFPB's HMDA Proposal Notes Costs of More Data Collection

On July 24, the CFPB proposed rules that would significantly expand the data collected under HMDA as well as proposals for streamlining reporting. We've been looking at the proposals considering a comment letter, and a couple things from an ABA staff analysis really jump out at us. The costs estimated by the CFPB are specifically of concern, but there is a lot of increased burden, especially on small banks, in the proposed rules. Find out more about what else is troubling to us...

We're Monitoring BCBS Georgia and Northeast Georgia Health System Talks

GBA Insurance Trust is closely monitoring discussions members may have heard about between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia and Northeast Georgia Health System for continued inclusion of their doctors and medical center in the Blue Cross network. We sent a memo last week to GBAIT member HR administrators in the northeast Georgia area outlining some key facts about the issue. "The most important thing of note is there is no immediate change to your coverage or your access to doctors and services provided by Northeast Georgia Health System," said GBAIT President and CEO Dan Thomason in the memo. HARP Help Still Available for 53,530 Georgians

More than 53,000 Georgia homeowners are eligible to save an average of $163 a month on their mortgage payment through the ongoing HARP program. A recent meeting here in Georgia about the program included a toolkit that has excellent materials to share about HARP if you have customers that may be eligible. HARP is a refinance program for borrowers who have remained current on their mortgages and have loans owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Included in the toolkit are a Fact Sheet and a sample newsletter you can use to reach out directly to homeowners.
