Congress Hearing Our Pleas for Tailored Regulation

Getting away from the "one size fits none" regulation of the banking industry got a boost this week when Georgia's two senators, Johnny Isakson and David Perdue, were among 70 senators writing CFPB asking the community financial institutions be exempted from many regulations that harm consumers instead of protecting them. The nation's banking leaders gathered this week for the ABA Summer Leadership Meeting to plan advocacy strategies, and tailored regulation is at the top of the priorities. Georgia bankers attending were Dan Blanton, Georgia Bank & Trust Company, Augusta, ABA chairman; Jim Edwards, United Bank, Griffin, chairman, ABA Community Bankers Council; Stan Kryder, First Landmark Bank, Marietta, Georgia's representative to the ABA Government Relations Council; Rick Drews, Century Bank of Georgia, Cartersville, GBA chairman; and Joe Brannen, GBA president and CEO. New Cotton Support Program Announced

We got word last week that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has set up a new program to support cotton producers in Georgia and throughout the country. In November 2015 GBA sent a letter of support for a cotton crop assistance program and led a campaign to include banks on a statewide letter to the Secretary of Agriculture from the Georgia Cotton Commission, and national bank trade associations led similar campaigns. The Cotton Ginning Cost Share (CGCS) program will provide about $304 million in cost-share assistance payments to cotton producers to expand and maintain the domestic marketing of cotton. Bank Advocacy Campaigns Running with Conventions

America’s banks help people and communities grow, and that’s the main thrust of a targeted digital and social media campaign that launched this week. The ABA is running the digital media messaging campaign to accompany the Republican and Democratic nominating conventions. Social media ads and posts will run on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram and will be accompanied by the hashtag #AmericasBanks. GBA encourages bankers who use social media to join the conversation by retweeting, reposting and liking ABA's posts and by sharing their own positive stories of banking using the same hashtag. Follow ABA on the following accounts here: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram...
