How to Build a Strong Card Portfolio

One of the most consistent themes we’ve heard from GBA member banks in the past couple of years has been the search for new sources of loan growth and revenue. One possible avenue is the Corserv Account Issuer credit card program. Corserv can help a bank systematically build a predictable, profitable, easily managed credit card portfolio. Consumer, small business and corporate card programs available. What’s unique about the Corserv Account Issuer card product is that the bank originates, funds and keeps the account balances on its books. Learn more here...

D.C. Visit Covers all the Issues

A large contingency of GBA members were in Washington, D.C., this week for our annual advocacy visits with regulators and legislators. High-level access to regulators is always a highlight. FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg briefed our group during our visit there, and GBA was one of only four state bankers associations being briefed by the Federal Reserve this year. And, both Georgia Senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, met with our members during a joint session. The trip included briefings from the OCC, CFPB and Treasury department, as well as a majority of Georgia’s delegation in the House of Representatives. Read more about the visit...

House Passes GBA-Supported Reg. Relief Measures

As GBA Chairman Stan Kryder mentioned above, the U.S. House took positive steps on two bills GBA supports during our visit to Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, the House passed H.R. 3329 and H.R. 2672. The bills would raise the threshold for small bank holding company regulatory relief from $500 million to $1 billion and provide a mechanism for individuals and businesses in rural areas to appeal the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's designation of a rural or underserved area. Read more about the bills.

Westmoreland Introduces Bill to Limit
Data Collection by CFPB

Georgia Rep. Lynn Westmoreland this week took action to curb intensive data collection about bank customers by the CFPB. The CFPB Data Collection Security Act is a five part bill that includes a consumer opt-out list and puts 60-day time limits on the data held by the bureau. The bill would also require CFPB to provide one free year of credit monitoring, a Senate-confirmed Director to head the agency and a “confidential” security clearance for certain CFPB employees. CFPB to Ease Privacy Notice Requirements

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Tuesday proposed easing the annual privacy notice requirement under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. Under the proposed rule, entities subject to CFPB supervision may post their privacy notices online rather than delivering them individually if there are no changes since the previous notice and other easily met standards. Read the proposed rule.

New Resource Guide to Help with CRA Consideration

The FDIC has produced a resource guide, Strategies for Community Banks to Develop Partnerships with Community Development Financial Institutions, to inform FDIC-supervised institutions of strategies to meet community credit and development needs and receive consideration under the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) through collaboration with community development financial institutions (CDFIs). Alternatives to Consolidation Breakout Session: Why and How You Can Succeed as an Independent Community Bank

Merger and acquisition activity and speculation get plenty of headlines. However, there’s a core group of Georgia banks that intend to stay independent. There are pressures and headwinds that make remaining independent a challenge, for sure, but there are strategies for success. During one of our breakout sessions during the GBA Annual Meeting June 15-17 a panel of Georgia bankers will share their latest thinking about how independent banks can successfully meet challenges that include compliance burden and cost, risk management, technology, customer growth and talent development.
