Election Produces Few Georgia Surprises

The historic election Tuesday told us a lot about the electorate and the change they were willing to support. Beyond Donald Trump’s win that few predicted, there were no surprises for us among the Georgia Congressional delegation. We were glad longtime supporter of our industry Sen. Johnny Isakson got re-elected without a runoff. Our only new congressman will be Drew Ferguson who is replacing retiring Rep. Lynn Westmoreland. We’ve known Drew all his life as his father is a former banker from West Point who served on the GBA Board and was elected statewide as our Secretary/Treasurer several years ago. All the other incumbents in our delegation will be returning to Congress. Within the Georgia General Assembly, four incumbent state House members were defeated Tuesday. We’ve had a history of working with each and we already know most of their replacements. There are three former legislators returning, and we reached out to them during the campaign season and look forward to working with them. There is likely to be some movement among committee chairs in the Senate because of Gov. Nathan Deal’s appointment of Sen. Charlie Bethel (R-Dalton) to the Court of Appeals this week. But for the most part, we expect to be working with many of the same leadership in the General Assembly we know well and who are responsive to the concerns of bankers and the communities you serve. For an early read on the national election outcome, here's a link to an analysis from ABA. With questions, contact Elizabeth Chandler, 404.420.2027 or Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026.

How Georgia Bankers Got out the Vote

We’re proud Georgia’s banks encouraged everyone to vote as part of our Georgia Bankers Democracy Days campaign. Of particular note, Pinnacle Bank had a unique campaign led by Jenny Wofford, who is a member of the Leadership GBA Executive Committee. Anna Jones at the bank also helped with the bank’s campaign. In addition to asking customers to vote and sharing helpful resources, the bank encouraged employee voting through an early-voting and general-election-day voting contest in which employees who voted were eligible to win gift cards. Voter turnout among Pinnacle employees was 70 percent. See a list of all the banks participating in the Georgia Bankers Democracy Days campaign here. With questions, contact David Oliver, 404.420.2036, or Bo Brannen, 404.420.2014.
