GBA-Signed Reg Reform Letter Goes to U.S. Senate
Last week we mentioned efforts by GBA and others to encourage Congress to move on bipartisan regulatory reform, including a breakfast meeting we had with Georgia Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA-11) and House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX-5). Focusing on the other Congressional chamber, the letter we signed with other state bankers associations to the chair and ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee urging bipartisan cooperation in considering regulatory reform in support of the efforts was delivered Monday. The letter is in advance of legislation expected to be considered soon by the committee addressing a big slate of regulatory reform ideas we believe should not get bogged down in partisan ideological disputes such as qualified mortgage status for portfolio loans, the ability for regulators to better tailor rules to business and risk models of banks and refined capital and liquidity requirements. "We appreciate your efforts and urge you not to allow partisanship to stand in the way of promptly passing much-needed reforms," the letter says. Georgia Sen. David Perdue serves on the committee, and we'll remain in touch with him as the legislation and debate develop. Here's a link to the letter. With questions, contact Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026, or Elizabeth Chandler, 404.420.2027.

GBA Member Profile
Nolan's Family Job Title: Chaos Coordinator

Newton Federal Bank's Tessa Nolan is a banker with purpose. In this week's GBA member profile, she explains how a lot of people don't understand that money doesn't necessarily mean the most to bankers. "The thing that means the most to us is our purpose - our reason for existing. When we connect with people, share in their struggles, work alongside them for the things in which they believe, we fulfill our purpose for existing," says Nolan, who is Newton Federal Bank's chief financial officer and an at-large member of the GBA Asset/Liability Management Committee. When she's not at the bank, she has her hands full at home with three-year-old twins, which is why she calls herself "Chaos Coordinator." Read more from Nolan here, including the value she says she and others get from attending the GBA Financial Risk Management Conference coming up in Nov. 8-9, and other GBA programs.

GBA 125 Look-Back
The Coleslaw Banker

A community banker from the hills of North Georgia earned the nickname "Coleslaw Banker" by being the brains behind the idea of banks opening branches in grocery stores. In 1984, the first Supermarket Bank was opened with "butterflies as big as this building," J. Alton Wingate once said. 700,000 miles of air travel, persistence and passion paid off as the franchise he birthed had locations in seven states and overseas.
