Advocacy in Action: GBA Goes to Class and Another Athens Stop

Students and business leaders in Athens this week got a heavy dose of GBA’s message about the importance of the banking industry and the recent good performance of the industry. On Tuesday, GBA President and CEO Joe Brannen spoke to two classes of University of Georgia Accounting graduate students. Brannen was the guest of Tim Keadle of the Porter Keadle Moore accounting firm, who is the class instructor. On Wednesday, Brannen was back in Athens speaking to the Rotary Club of Athens. He detailed the recent strong performance of our state’s banks and the key regulatory, technology, security and economic development trends for the industry. Brannen spoke at the request of Will Hodges, First American Bank & Trust, who is president of the club. GBA often speaks to banker and business groups to share the story about banking beyond the headlines. Click here to find out more…

Learn Secrets to Competing in a Fintech World

Competition from non-bank financial service providers has accelerated. Achieving rapid transformation to foster new ideas and make smart use of new technologies is a major challenge for banks. The growing competition means that time is of the essence. How should you do this? What is the value at risk? What change is likely in the future? Chris Nichols, chief strategy officer, CenterState Bank, Walnut Creek, CA, will answer these questions while sharing the latest innovative processes and strategies that all banks should consider. GBA’s President /CEO Conference is Oct. 2-4 at The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, Greensboro. Conference brochures will be available soon but you can review the detailed agenda here. Georgia Trend: How May We Serve You?

The folks at Georgia Trend magazine this month have a good story about community banking in Georgia. Four GBA members are highlighted: Ed Cooney, Affinity Bank, Atlanta; Bran Thompson, South Georgia Bank, Glennville; Bartow Morgan, BrandBank, Lawrenceville and Jimmy Tallent, United Community Bank, Blairsville. Each contributed stories about how their institutions are finding ways to foster growth as Georgia’s economy continues to expand. “The piece is a good news story about the commitment of bankers. It’s interesting to read about their diversity and what they’re doing to serve the needs of their borrowers. Their stories show the strength within the community of bankers we’re fortunate to have here in Georgia,” said GBA President & CEO Joe Brannen. Here’s a link to the digital version of the article.

Bedsole Busts Myths about Compliance Officers

The one thing BankSouth’s Jim Bedsole wants the world to know about bank compliance officers is that they’re not “lonely, introverted nerds who like to catch people making mistakes.” Bedsole tries to break out from that stereotype at his bank by using humor, focusing on teamwork and finding ways to say yes to things. And in his spare time, he’s a pilot who, as a kid, had dreams of becoming an astronaut. Read more about Bedsole, who is chief compliance and risk officer at BankSouth in Greensboro in this week’s GBA member profile. Bedsole is also chair of GBA’s Compliance Committee and GBA Compliance School board. Our Compliance Conference is coming up Sept. 14-16 in Macon (there’s still time to register…) and enrollment is open for the 2017 GBA Intermediate Compliance School session in Athens next May...
