We opened every one of our 10 member meetings celebrating our 125th anniversary with a short video chronicling the association's history and celebrating the people who are today's Georgia Bankers. You might see some familiar faces, and you'll enjoy a look back at the contributions our state's bankers have made to the industry, state and profession since 1892.

Secure Deposit Program Briefing Coming in October
Banks interested in participating in the Georgia Secure Deposit program beginning Jan. 1 should make plans to get application information to us no later than the end of October. The Georgia Secure Deposit Program is the new option for protecting public deposits above FDIC insurance, potentially allowing lower collateral levels for banks with public deposits. Participants agree to contingent liability provisions to join the other banks in the program in covering losses to depositors not covered by FDIC insurance or collateral in the program, based on their pro rata share of deposits covered by the program. Equifax Breach
Customer Communications Ideas and Update on Regulatory Concerns

We've noticed several members taking nice proactive steps during the past couple weeks to help customers worried about their accounts related to the Equifax Breach. The examples we've seen note how the breach does not directly affect customer accounts at the bank, provide accurate links to resources from Equifax, encourage customers to use the tools the bank makes available to monitor accounts and provide links to other helpful resources. Home Depot Settlement with Banks on Data Breach Suit Approved
U.S. District Chief Judge Thomas Thrash Jr. last week approved a $27.25 million settlement between Home Depot and financial institutions in a lawsuit resulting from the 2014 Home Depot Data Breach. The settlement brought together claims from more than two dozen class action suits brought by banks and other financial institutions. Home Depot has set aside $25 million of the settlement to pay each financial institution $2 for every card compromised. The rest of the funds will be paid to financial institutions involved in another settlement card companies reached separately with Home Depot. The settlement was originally announced in March. Serial Bank Robber Receives 15 Year Plus Prison Sentence
Quinn Morgan of Milledgeville, was sentenced in Macon this week to 188 months imprisonment for multiple counts of bank robbery. There is no parole in the federal system. Between 2015 and 2016, Morgan robbed six banks in the Middle Georgia District and elsewhere. "It was the excellent police and investigative work by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office and the FBI that led to the capture of this serial robber and brought his nine month crime spree to an end," said United States Attorney G.F. Peterman. "It is good to know that Mr. Morgan will not be able to feed his addiction to other people's money for the next one and a half decades." Read more here…

Get Details of New HMDA Rule Ahead of Jan.1 Deadline

2018 will be here before you know it, and that means implementing new HMDA data collection and reporting rules. The types of covered loans will be expanded significantly, e.g. HELOCs, and there will be a high volume of new "data points" to be collected, e.g. debt-to-value and credit scores.
