Credit Committee Digs in to Key Issues for Credit Officers and Lenders
The GBA Credit Committee met this week, and the discussion touched on a number of weighty issues. The committee talked about staff development and training for credit officers and lenders, CFPB issues related to mortgage lending, how technology is changing how they do their jobs and interact with customers and a number of other issues. First Landmark Bank's Terrie Bunten Guthrie chairs the committee, which also began planning the agenda for the annual GBA Credit Conference. The committee is co-chaired by Mark Wills, Georgia Bank & Trust Company in Augusta. Look for full details about the Conference soon, or go ahead and register now. GBA Public Advocacy Reaches Auto Renting and Leasing Group
An improving banking industry in Georgia and a strong member commitment to business and community customers were the key messages from Joe Brannen, GBA president and CEO (pictured at right with Daimler Trucks’ John Martin, CATRALA president), to the Car and Truck Renting and Leasing Association (CATRALA) Monday. Brannen shared an early look at second-quarter banking results, which again showed a higher percentage of profitable Georgia banks. He also talked about improved family and business finances, increasing regulation and technology as trends. GBA often speaks to banker and business groups to share the story about banking beyond the headlines. Contact Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026, or David Oliver, 404.420.2036, with questions.

Bank Secrecy Act compliance continues to draw significant regulatory attention. This week the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued an advisory urging banks and others to strengthen their culture of Bank Secrecy Act compliance. "Regardless of its size and business model, a financial institution with a poor culture of compliance is likely to have shortcomings in its BSA/AML program," the advisory says. It lays out six keys to a strong compliance culture, which you can read here. "It's so frustrating to read that kind of statement coming from a regulatory agency when I see how hard our members work to comply with BSA/AML. To suggest banks don't have a ‘culture of compliance' is downright offensive," said GBA president and CEO, Joe Brannen. GBA has resources to help our members with both their overall compliance efforts and specifically addressing BSA. Don't miss the GBA Compliance Conference, Sept. 24-26, which includes a BSA session. We also have a great seminar covering all the BSA basics coming up Aug. 21. With questions about the conference, contact Kathy Friestad, 404.420.2024. With questions about the seminar, contact Danielle Driggers, 404.420.2002. See our full Compliance calendar here...

Contractor Oversight – The New Norm is Vendor Management
Contract out a product or service -- set and forget it...not any more. Regulators have established numerous and detailed expectations of oversight and management of vendors. And, they are enforcing those expectations in numerous administrative and expensive actions. At the GBA 2014 Compliance Conference, Jimmy Loyless, managing partner of GemRay & Associates in Loudon, TN, will discuss those expectations, provide examples of the regulatory actions, and answer your questions. The Compliance Conference will be held Sept. 24-26 at Idle Hour Country Club in Macon. You may choose to register for the full conference, Day 1 only (compliance risk management), or Days 2 and 3 only (loans). Click here for more agenda details, hotel information and online registration. Contact Kathy Friestad, 404.420.2024, with questions.

Credit Score Changes Benefit Consumers
FICO will change the way it calculates credit scores, it announced recently, and the two changes should lead to higher credit scores for some consumers, the company says. FICO said its credit scores won't count past-due accounts that have been paid to a collection agency. And, it will segment medical collection accounts from non-medical collection accounts, a change that could improve some consumers' scores by 25 points, the company said. "This will help ensure that medical collections have a lower impact on the score, commensurate with the credit risk they represent," FICO said.

IRA Advanced Update and Review Workshop - Sept. 25
In a landmark case, the courts and IRS have re-defined the "once-per-12-month" rule. Banks must know about this so their customers can avoid huge IRS tax and penalty pitfalls. At this seminar you will be taught to separate fact from fiction for the more technical areas of IRAs. Too many times so-called experts post things on the internet that are vague or many times fabricated about retirement account rules and regulations. IRAs are a specialized area requiring expertise. Come and learn from one of the most respected IRA experts in the country, Patrice Konarik of Sunwest Training Corp., at GBA's seminar Sept. 25. The seminar will be at The Brickyard Golf Club in Macon. Please click here to register for the seminar. With questions, please contact GBA's Danielle Driggers at 404.420.2002.

Tune Up Your Overdraft Program and Stay Compliant with John Floyd and Associates
Financial institutions looking for ways to remain viable and competitive can no longer rely on conducting business as usual. As the opportunities to generate fees from traditional services are reduced, many are concerned with how to maintain a level of income that allows them to offer the services that keep them competitive. It's a challenging balancing act at best: increase your bottom line while staying compliant and delivering the services and service levels your account holders demand. According to industry experts, service charges on deposits have decreased substantially from levels reported just two years ago. And with ongoing regulatory pressures during that timeframe, the two products that produced the most non-interest income - debit card interchange fees and overdraft/NSF fees - have been greatly restricted. What actions can community banks take to offset the reductions in net non-interest income losses as a result of these pressures? Download and return a Performance Improvement Analysis from GBA Strategic Partner John Floyd here. John M. Floyd and Associates (JMFA) is the preferred vendor of the JMFA Overdraft Privilege® program. For more information please contact Waid Thompson, JMFA's regional sales director, at 888.345.8639.
