Urge House Support of PPP Forgiveness Legislation

Please join our efforts to encourage Georgia’s U.S. House of Representatives delegation to support H.R. 7777, which would allow PPP loans of $150,000 or less to be forgiven once the borrower completes a one-page forgiveness attestation. It’s a companion to a bill in the Senate we’ve shared details about previously. A simpler forgiveness process is also among the list of issues being proposed for inclusion in the U.S. Senate’s next coronavirus relief package, but let’s keep up the effort to support a standalone bill. With questions, contact Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026, or Elizabeth Chandler, 404.420.2027. Here’s how to contact your representative now.

The Scoop on the Coin Circulation Issue

As many retailers have begun requesting exact change and news stories have focused on the limited circulation of coins due to the pandemic, more members have been getting questions about the issue. The U.S. Coin Task Force July 24 issued a statement explaining that the issue isn’t a shortage of coins, rather it’s specifically related to fewer people and businesses using coins for purchases and other transactions during the pandemic. “As people have changed their spending habits, and coin-intensive businesses and financial institution lobbies have been less accessible, the nation’s coin is pooling in change jars, in car cup holders and in shuttered businesses, making it difficult for the businesses of this country to get the coin that they need to support cash transactions,” the statement said. While the U.S. Mint has substantially upped its coin production, the challenge is likely to continue until traditional locations such as schools and retailers return to historical patterns before more widespread circulation occurs. Here’s an additional set of notes to help you explain the issue to customers. With questions, contact Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026.

2020 BankPAC Campaign Kicks Off, Activity Strong Already

The 2020 BankPAC Board of Directors is excited to announce the official kickoff to this year’s campaign! CEOs should have received the brochure this week along with an authorization card to be signed and contribution forms for both the GBA StatePAC and FedPAC, among other items. This information is also easily accessed on the BankPAC page of GBA’s website. “We are more committed than ever to elevate the importance of this effort as it is in our collective interests to do everything possible to protect and promote our industry,” said BankPAC Board Chair Luke Flatt, president and CEO of AB&T, Albany. “Furthermore, many of our pro-banking, pro-business partners elected to Congress and the Georgia General Assembly are in need of our support going into this fall’s election. We are 100% focused on helping to elect those candidates who support Georgia’s banks, and your contributions help cement GBA's effectiveness in being the resource elected officials turn to for credible, factual information about our industry,” he added.

As a result of the BankPAC request coupled with GBA dues earlier this summer, the campaign is off to a great start. Here is a list of those banks contributing to the GBA StatePAC and those banks whose eligible employees, officers and directors contributed to the GBA FedPAC. With questions, call Elizabeth Chandler at 404.420.2027.

Women in Banking Virtual Series: Conversations and Connections for Empowerment

We’re excited to announce the Women in Banking Virtual Series: Conversations and Connections for Empowerment, a series of six virtual sessions held live each month beginning Sept. 15. Brought to you by GBA and the North Carolina Bankers Association (NCBA), this series is intended to inform, enlighten, and re-energize our women bankers. ABA Chair Laurie Stewart, President and CEO, Sound Financial Bancorp., Inc., Seattle, will kick off the series. Stewart's story is amazing. Her banking career started as a teller. She ran a tiny credit union and led its conversion to a mutual bank and then to a publicly traded company. She has been named Community Banker of the year by American Banker. And, she’s the current Chairman of the American Bankers Association. Other speakers will include Natalie Bartholomew, better known to our Women in Banking Conference attendees as The Girl Banker - hooray! Dr. Melissa Furman, Founder/Consultant with Career Potential, LLC, who was a huge hit at last year’s WiB Conference; and Cassandra “Cassi” Chandler, well-known to North Carolina's female bankers. Click here to read about Chandler; her accomplishments are too numerous to list here! And two other sessions are being developed now. Per person registration will include six (6) live Zoom sessions with optional casual peer networking time afterward, and a discount will be available when three or more register from the same bank/company. Sessions will be available on-demand if you miss any along the way. Registration will open on Monday, and additional details will be shared then, so watch your email early next week. Contact Kathy Friestad with questions.

The IRA Merry-Go-Round is back, as a Webinar!

GBA’s most popular seminar is now available as a webinar. Join Patrice Konarik, Sunwest Training Corp., and attend the two-day IRA Merry-Go-Round Webinar: Basic & Advanced Issues from the convenience of your own office via Live Streaming Video as it happens on Aug. 25 and 26 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) or at your own convenience with six months of OnDemand playback. This will allow more bankers to attend at once, avoid the necessity of travel and extend availability of the training for every member of your bank's staff.

If Patrice said "What a year!", that would be a huge understatement about all the changes in the world, and that includes how managing a bank's IRA offerings has been affected! The SECURE Act that was signed into law at the end of 2019 became effective on Jan. 1, 2020, bringing lots of changes to IRAs – some good and some not-so-good. Then COVID-19 totally changed our "normal" to "What the Heck?" In March 2020, the CARES Act was signed into law to give everyone financial relief due to the stock market going down and the unemployment going up.

You will also receive your favorite tool - the 275-page 2020-2021 Sunwest Training Corp’s IRA Training and Reference Manual to download and print. It’s not only full of easy-to-follow IRA information, but also lots of cheat sheets and quick reference tools to get you through your day-to-day tasks of dealing with your IRA customers.

Whether you are looking to gain basic knowledge of IRAs, raise your comfort level or sharpen your skills with the most up-to-date rules and regulations, this two-day format will cover everything!
