GBA Roundtables are Ready to Kick Off for 2024

GBA’s popular peer roundtables are ready to start up for 2024. Click here for a complete 2024 schedule of our President/CEO, Finance/Operations and Leadership groups. Emails from Joe Brannen with 2024 invoices to all sitting members of these groups are arriving in inboxes Dec. 15. If you do NOT receive your 2024 Roundtable invoice by email, please connect with us now to assure that your seat is reserved. We encourage you to rejoin your Roundtable peers for the upcoming year and stay tuned in to the ideas, networking, best practices, current events, useful session materials, and customized facilitation provided. Elaine Demarest and Chrys Henderson of Demarest Strategy Group, Inc. will serve as our facilitators again this year. Feedback from participants continues to give them high marks for preparing up-to-the-minute data and guiding productive peer discussions with plenty of take-away ideas for the members. Each Roundtable group will meet twice during the year. We will continue to hold our in-person Roundtable sessions in the Hatcher Conference Center at Middle Georgia State University (“MGSU”) in Macon. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Peer members will receive extensive advance session materials before each Roundtable, plus plenty of custom financial reports and Q&A email networking support throughout the year. If you are interested in joining a group for the new 2024 year, please contact Kathy Friestad or Elaine Demarest at Spaces are limited. We will use best efforts to find you a geography-compatible seat to avoid direct competitive overlaps for comfortable brainstorming discussions with your peers.

Advocacy in Action

United Bank Leadership Program Gets Industry and Advocacy Overview

We appreciate being invited to share the latest about the industry with the United Bank internal leadership program last week. GBA’s Joe Brannen co-presented with bank CEO Jim Edwards to this year’s class of the bank’s mentor/mentee program. In addition to key stats, facts, figures and advocacy priorities, the two also had a conversation during which Brannen shared examples of effective leadership by national and state leaders, other bankers and association leaders during his career. GBA often speaks to banker and business groups to tell the story about banking beyond the headlines. Contact David Oliver, 404.520.6311, with questions.

Leader Updates

SBA Stats, Beige Book, OCC Risks, Political Polling

Our series of regular email updates to CEOs, committee members and other key leaders continued this week. Topics included:

  • GA SBA Lending: More than $1.4 billion in SBA loans were made to Georgia borrowers during the agency’s recently completed fiscal year. 7(a) loans were the most by volume, at almost $1.2 billion. The most loans were to women-owned businesses, and the largest increase in the number of loans was to Latino-owned businesses, up 130%.

  • Beige Book: We looked at the recent trend in the Fed’s Sixth District economic reports, especially the language used to describe conditions. The gist is that not every sector of our state’s economy is flourishing. And that matches what we’re hearing.

  • OCC Risks: The agency’s semi-annual risk assessment is out. Overall the banking system is safe and sound, it reports. New to the list of risks that artificial intelligence is creating additional compliance, credit, reputation and operational risk.

  • Independent/Third-Party Candidates: We looked at a poll that showed two independent candidates drawing 16% support, and 11% of respondents are undecided. Trump led the poll.

If you’d like more information about any of those topics, contact Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026

Ebony James

GBA Member Profile

Insights on Trust, Instincts and Financial Protection

Ebony James, AVP, compliance analyst at Craft Bank, began her career in financial services as a teller for a financial institution in California. Juggling her role with studies in criminology, Ebony discovered a knack for identifying fraud, counterfeit money and forged documents. “Of course, no one ever wanted to come to my teller window,” she exclaimed. Colleagues quickly recognized her talent, leading to her transition into a role in loss prevention. This marked the beginning of a career path that seamlessly evolved from fraud detection to BSA and compliance. In addition to her eye for detecting fraud, Ebony also relies on instinct in her role, following the mantra of “go with your gut.” “I’ve always had that gut feeling when something is good, or more often, when something wasn’t right. I operate with the philosophy to trust but also inspect,” she said. The member of GBA’s Compliance Committee shares about her experience teaching an elder financial exploitation class in Mexico, exercise regimen that supercharges her day, and much more in the latest GBA Member Profile.

The Changing Face of Leadership

By Ned Pauley, GBA Associate Member Haberfeld

Simply stated, a leader is someone others follow. Leadership is not a title. It’s not a reward for length of employment. It’s an act of service that inspires people toward a shared vision. If you’ve been in bank leadership for a while, you know the role is changing. Perhaps more accurately, followership is changing. It’s not that people no longer want to be led. What’s changing is how and by whom they want to be led. The good news is that leaders who recognize and adapt to these changes will thrive. They will attract talent and give their banks a competitive advantage. Those who don’t will face increasing frustration in their role and decreasing returns in their results. What type of leader does today’s workforce want to follow? Here are three qualities.

Commercial Lending Training – Webinars

Breaking into Banking 101 – Fundamentals of Commercial Banking, Thursday, Feb. 22

Commercial banking can be intimidating because of its complexity and the risk-oriented nature of the work. This course is a clear and thorough introduction to the key concepts, terminology, and processes involved in credit and lending. It doesn’t assume much prior knowledge of the topic, so it’s ideal for those in their first year in the industry. Learners will walk away with a clear understanding of their job and how their specific role fits into the bank’s overall profitability goals. Click here to register.

Breaking into Banking 201 – Analyzing Repayment Sources, Wednesday, March 27

This 9-module online course is a “sequel” to the 101 course and is best taken after completion of that course, though it is not a prerequisite. The 201 course includes a case study and dives deeper into topics covered in modules 4, 6, and 8 of the 101 course: analyzing a borrower’s balance sheet, income statement, collateral, and risk ratings. Click here to register.

Both are presented by Andy Keusal, Keusal Learning. These online courses will be held by Zoom from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. EDT. The recording will be available to registered participants for one month after the live training.

Compliance Alliance Question of The Week

Question: Is an opt-out option required for fraud alert calls and texts?

Answer: The FCC now requires an opt-out mechanism for fraud alert calls and text messages, as well as imposing limits to the frequency of these fraud alert calls and messages. Under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), "messages" are included within the definition of a "call."

Subscribe to Compliance Alliance's email newsletters for timely compliance updates and resources. Sign up for one of the live Compliance Alliance demos on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to learn more.

Bad HMDA Data Can Cost Banks Millions

Back in the early 2010s, loan officers at a large multinational bank failed to gather required mortgage applicant demographic information, falsely reporting that applicants chose not to provide it. Now, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is fining the bank $12 million for violating the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA). Effective employee training is the core of any strong compliance management program, and it can help head off problems like the example above. Training promotes adherence to HMDA. How do you translate HMDA compliance policies and processes into procedures? Regulators and examiners emphasize the critical role of the board and management in fostering a culture of compliance. They seek to verify that lenders possess effective compliance policies and processes and actively maintain oversight. Without such oversight, the actual effectiveness of HMDA compliance policies remains unclear. Read more from GBA partner NContracts and visit to learn about the ways they can help.
