Leader Updates

The R-Word, Small Biz Optimism, Prez Polls and More

Our series of regular email updates to CEOs, committee members and other key leaders continued this week. Topics included:

  • R-Word Reluctance: We took a look at how some economists are hesitant to opine on a possible recession and shared a related outtake from the economist at our annual meeting who compared/contrasted the Georgia and Colorado economies.

  • Small Business Optimism: We took a look at the NFIB’s Small Business Optimism Index. Of note were good trends on access to credit and a pretty solid outlook for capital outlays from businesses, representing loan opportunities. Read details here.

  • Polls: We shared some of the latest polls about how the presidential race may shape up next year.

  • Text Message Scams: The FTC was out recently with some granular data about fake bank fraud warnings being the most common text-message scam. Here’s a link to the report.

  • Risk Trends: Credit risk is moderate, cyber threats remain a major risk and compliance risks rise with new customer service and product expectations, according to the latest OCC semi-annual risk report. Read details here.

If you’d like more information about any of those topics, contact Joe Brannen, 404.420.2026.

Carl Pry

Hot Topic Webinar

Risks (and Rewards) of Artificial Intelligence in Banking - Monday, July 31

There has been a lot in the news lately about the use of artificial intelligence, or AI, in the banking industry. But there is more to it than just AI – financial institutions are increasingly using algorithms and so-called “big data” in their operations. The benefits are obvious – more effective marketing, more efficient underwriting of credit, and just an overall sense of better knowing the customer. However, there are significant risks to using AI and nontraditional data when dealing with customers and prospects. Nationally recognized compliance expert Carl Pry will be discussing these risks (and others) during the Risks (and Rewards) of Artificial Intelligence in Banking webinar on 7/31.

Who should attend: This interactive session is appropriate for anyone in the institution involved in the marketing, management, and servicing of retail products. As these technologies are pervasive throughout the product lifecycle, most anyone, Board members included, will benefit from this information.

Get details and register here.

Compliance Alliance Question of The Week

Question: We have a loan request to consolidate multiple student loans secured by a car title. Is consolidation of student loans considered a "private education loan" under Regulation Z that requires student loan disclosures?

Answer: Whether this is a private education loan requiring disclosures under Reg Z depends on if it meets the definition of a private education loan. Regulation Z commentary explains that a loan to consolidate pre-existing private education loans is considered a postsecondary education expense and potentially a private education loan requiring Reg Z disclosures. Read more here.
